Travel to Cheyenne, Wyoming

Well, we spent the better part of today on the road. Left Salt Lake City around 8:15 this morning and arrived at A. B. Camping RV Park at 4:30. This is a very nice, family owned campground. The owners are very friendly and helpful. They also run a BBQ restaurant as a part of their business and we just had to check it out for dinner tonight. It was delicious!! We have not eaten our desserts yet, homemade banana cream and chocolate pie!! Will make a very good bedtime snack. I am sure they will be delicious too….

The drive from Salt Lake City to Cheyenne was sort of boring. The scenery was pretty much the same for 90% of the trip which makes for a long day. I have attached pictures of what we found interesting. The one part of the trip that we found the most interesting was some of the hills and the wind erosion that has occurred. Some of the areas looked very similar to the badlands of South Dakota. For the most part though, the southern Wyoming countryside is pretty desolate. No crops or anything like that, just hay fields in some places. We did see a lot of cattle, some horses and a few herds of Pronghorn deer. But no buffalo this time!! :-) The scenery did improve as we got closer to Cheyenne, as you will see in the last 3-4 pictures.
The wind was extremely strong for our entire drive here. Fortunately it was tail winds. That helped our fuel mileage for this leg of our trip!!

We will be leaving for Denver in the morning and hope to be there for a couple of days. Charley is checking on a campsite now. We are also hoping to be able to visit with Charley’s first cousin, maybe do dinner with her and her family, while we are there, if schedules work out okay.

Our Last Day in Salt Lake City

We did our sight seeing in Salt Lake City today. We went to Antelope State Park to see the best views of the great Salt Lake. Got some pretty nice pictures while we were there. And, believe it or not, we also found more Pronghorn and Buffalo along the way!! :-)

We also went back downtown to get better pictures of Temple Square and the home of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The pictures from earlier this week were not very good. It was raining but we managed to get a few fairly good pictures.

Charley also got a couple of pictures of a beautiful sunrise over the Wasatch Mountains.
Salt Lake City is a typical large city with lots of traffic! We will be glad to get back into the small town, scenic environment.

And, believe it or not again, we did change our plans once again and we will be going to Cheyenne after all. We are going to break our rule and travel about 400 miles tomorrow which will be a very long day for us. We are only going to spend one night in Cheyenne and then travel on to Denver. We are planning to go to the Escapees Rally in Gillette, Wyoming next year and will spend more time in Cheyenne and the surrounding area then.

We are going out to dinner after our trip downtown and then coming back to rest up for tomorrow.

Well, we have not done much in the way of sight seeing yet in Salt Lake City but plan to tomorrow. Our F450 (Silver) needed a bath and so did Cheyenne so that is what we took care of today. Yesterday we had to do some shopping to restock after having the kids for a week so we did see a little of the area then. We took a quick tour of the city and did see the church/cathedral that is the home of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. That is a beautiful place!

We plan to go for a drive around Salt Lake City tomorrow with particular attention being paid to the Salt Lake. Then we will be starting on our trip home.

After checking on campgrounds on the route we had planned to take through Cheyenne and then down to Denver we have changed that plan. There just do not seem to be many campgrounds between Salt Lake City and Cheyenne and 400+ miles is more than we are willing to travel in one day. So our tentative plan is to go from here to Grand Junction and then to Denver and then east from there. But stay tuned!! It could change again.

And I promise more pictures tomorrow night after our sight seeing trip!!

Salt Lake City, Utah

Our kids arrived in SC safely. We miss them already!!

And I am sad to say that our Clemson Tigers did not take a win back to SC (Auburn beat them by a field goal in overtime). It was a very good game by both teams. Charley and I crashed as soon as the game was over!!

We left Pocatello at about 9:30 this morning and got to the Pony Express RV Resort at a little after 12:00. This is a huge RV park with very nice, level sites with plenty of space. We think we are going to enjoy our stay here.

We are planning to do some sight seeing in the area and also get some rest from our busy week with the kids.

Friday and Saturday Update

The kids went horseback riding on Friday while we stayed at the campground and prepared things for our departure on Saturday. I have attached a couple of pictures of their outing. One funny thing happened, our daughter Stacey, fell off her horse (she did not get hurt). Her husband Lee, after making sure she was okay, thought it was funny!! Needless to say, Stacey did not agree. Lee made me promise to put this on our blog for historical purposes. :-) She really was a good sport about the ribbing.

We got up, packed up, went to breakfast and then hooked up the 5er and headed for the airport this morning. It was sad to see them go. We really enjoyed their week with us. It was special.

We are now in Pocatello, Idaho at the Cowboy RV Park. We had to stop this quickly so that we would have cable TV to watch our Clemson Tigers beat Auburn. Charley would have checked the cable before anything else if he could have!! But it was checked very quickly.
We are planning to eat in tonight, relax, watch the game and will be packing up and moving on down the road to Salt Lake City in the morning. We are planning to stay there for four days.

We want to see all the sights that are there but we also need a little bit of rest before heading back east!!

Wednesday and Thursday Update

Well, we decided to hang around the campground and West Yellowstone for the day on Wednesday. We went to an iMax movie about bears and Cheyenne went with us. It is hard to believe but she actually watched the movie and didn’t make a sound. We also walked around town and shopped a little. We cooked a big breakfast and simple dinner but also got some rest.

Now Thursday was a long day. We left the campground at 7:00AM, picked up some breakfast at McDonalds and headed for Cody, Wyoming. Had to drive from Western to Eastern entrance of Yellowstone and then about 53 miles further to get there but it was worth it. What a gorgeous drive!! The landscape there is totally different from that of Yellowstone. We also saw the old western town that is still in existence in Cody and visited the Buffalo Bill museum.

Charley is very interested in returning to Cody and spending a few days. One of the things he wants to do is spend more time in the museum. It is quite an interesting place and there is an awful lot to see and take in. Our visit was fairly quick so we were not able to really do it justice.
We had a nice lunch at the Wyoming Rib & Chop House before heading back. We did not get back to the campground until 6:15.

The kids are going horseback riding on Friday afternoon and we are staying in to get things ready for our departure on Saturday and get a few housekeeping chores taken care of.

Yellowstone - Day 3

We got started on our day 3 tour of Yellowstone around 10:30 this morning and got back to the 5er around 4:45. Our primary objective was to take the kids to see the upper and lower falls, the Yellowstone Grand Canyon and Yellowstone Lake and we accomplished that. How beautiful!! All of them!!

An added bonus was that we saw more animals. We saw a golden mantled squirrel and a chipmunk along with more bison and elk, many more!! Still have not run into any bear, wolves or coyotes but maybe that is a good thing…. :-) Soon after we got back we made a run for pizza for dinner, worked with Jed on some of his homework assignments and then called it a day.

Planning to stick around the 5er tomorrow. We may try to see a little more of West Yellowstone. Maybe save time for a nap???….
